The Tunisian postal system

La Poste Tunisienne operates a delivery network spanning the entire country. With over 1,000 post offices across the 24 governorates, it handles collection, sorting and delivery of mail for roughly 12 million residents.

Postal code structure

The Tunisian postal code is a 4-digit numeric identifier. The first two digits mark a geographic zone, generally linked to a governorate or part of one. The next two digits pinpoint the distribution post office or a specific delivery sector. This layout lets sorting centres route mail to the correct delivery point.

Historical milestones

The Tunisian postal system was modernised after the country's independence in 1956. The 4-digit postal coding was introduced to keep pace with population growth and urban expansion. Over the decades, new codes were added as post offices opened, particularly in suburban areas and new towns.

Territorial coverage

The postal network covers all 24 governorates, from the north (Bizerte, Jendouba) to the south (Tataouine, Kebili). The current 969 postal codes serve major cities like Tunis, Sfax and Sousse as well as rural localities in the interior. A single code may cover a dense urban district or several villages in a rural zone.
